Reports To: Service Manager / Shop Foreman
Location: FLX Marine
FLX Marine is seeking a skilled and motivated Marine Technician to inspect, diagnose, maintain, rig, and repair a wide variety of recreational boats and marine systems. Technicians work on outboard, sterndrive, inboard, and surf boat systems while delivering high-quality workmanship and exceptional customer service. This position plays a critical role in ensuring our customers enjoy safe, reliable, and trouble-free boating experiences. Duties align with common marine technician responsibilities throughout the marine industry, including diagnostics, maintenance, repairs, rigging, testing, and documentation.
Core Responsibilities
Diagnostics & Repairs
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, steering, and control system issues.
- Perform repairs on marine engines, drives, trailers, and onboard systems.
- Utilize manufacturer diagnostic software and testing equipment.
- Troubleshoot complex intermittent issues and determine root causes.
- Conduct sea trials and operational testing as required.
Preventive Maintenance
- Perform annual engine services and scheduled maintenance.
- Complete winterization and de-winterization procedures.
- Change oils, filters, impellers, lubricants, and other service items.
- Inspect boats for safety, reliability, and operational readiness.
Rigging & Installation
- Install marine electronics, gauges, batteries, charging systems, trolling motors, and accessories.
- Perform wiring, cable routing, and electrical system upgrades.
- Install and test customer and OEM-installed options.
Work Order Management
- Accurately document diagnostics, repairs, parts used, and labor performed.
- Record technician notes clearly and professionally in DealerRock.
- Communicate additional repair recommendations through the Service Department.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas.
Quality & Safety
- Follow manufacturer procedures and FLX Marine standards.
- Perform quality control inspections on completed work.
- Maintain a safe work environment and use proper PPE.
- Protect customer boats and property while in our care.
Qualifications
Preferred
- Marine industry experience.
- Manufacturer certifications (Mercury, MerCruiser, Yamaha, Suzuki, Indmar, Volvo Penta).
- ABYC certifications or willingness to pursue certification.
- Technical school, vocational training, or equivalent experience.
Required
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to operate boats safely.
- Strong mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to read wiring diagrams and service manuals.
- Basic computer skills and comfort using diagnostic software.
Physical Requirements
- Lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Stand, kneel, crawl, and work in confined spaces as needed.
- Operate hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment safely.
